Is Our Universe Infinite?

Do you believe that our universe is infinite? This is a question that mathematicians don’t seem to be able to agree on. Some believe that infinity exists and some believe that it is impossible.

In theory, infinity is possible. You can count for an infinite amount by adding one each time, even if you have to create new numbers. So some mathematicians believe that infinity is therefore possible. Others claim that you will keep counting until you reach the biggest number, whatever that is, and when you add one to this number it will go back to zero and start all over again, because infinity is impossible. But is our universe infinite? And if so, do you know what the implications of this is? This is a belief that many people have that our universe goes on forever, but how much do you actually understand about infinity? If our universe is infinite, it means that if anything is possible, then it has already happened, and has happened an infinite amount of times.

The most well known analogy on this subject is the one that says, if you put a load of monkeys in a room with a typewriter, eventually, with enough time, they would type out the complete works of Shakespeare with all the correct margins and spacing. This seems very unlikely indeed I know, but given enough time it is actually possible. Scientists did an experiment by creating random letters on a computer to work out the odds of it happening and the numbers are huge. But these numbers become insignificant when dealing with infinity. As unlikely as it may be, with an infinite amount of time it would eventually happen because it is possible. And it would keep happening.

As you all know, it is possible for our world to evolve to what it is today, and you along with it. The fact that you are here reading this blog is proof enough that it is possible. Therefore, somewhere out there in an infinite universe there is another world just like this one that evolved in exactly the same way right down to the tiniest detail with another you that is sitting down reading a post just like this. Yes, that seems impossible, I know, but in an infinite universe that goes on forever and ever without end it WOULD eventually happen, however remote the chances are. And it would happen an infinite amount of times over and over again.

If something is possible, then in an infinite universe it has already happened and it will keep happening. Do you still believe that out universe is infinite?

  1. I think this is a slightly disturbing thought. Because if we go by the logic posted here, then the theory of Alternate Universes would be thrown out the window. With an infinite universe, all versions of you would be happening at the same time, at different times, in all possible combinations and possibilities...

I think I prefer my finite universe, with my alternate ones... It's so much less confusing.

  2. haha!! Hi mate! Good to hear from you :) Personally, I don't believe the universe is infinite, but what do I know? hehe!!

  3. I love the idea of an infinite universe - no beginning, no end. Doubt it will be proven in my lifetime, and in fact, if it is infinite, can it ever be proven since you never reach the end? Awesome to think about.

  4. Infinite or not, our universe is awesome! I wish I could see the Supermoon tonight, but it's too cloudy. *sigh* Why is it always too cloudy when something special's happening in the sky? Great theory, by the way. Food for thought!
