You Don’t Need a Kindle to Read Kindle Books—Kurt Chambers

This year has seen a massive explosion in the sale of Kindles and similar devices. I think this is great for several reasons. Firstly, it has helped encourage children to read more books. Kids like electronic devices, especially in this day and age, and anything that encourages kids to read has got to be a good thing. Secondly, it has given the many authors out there the chance to show off their writing skills to the masses. This was something that wasn’t always possible before. It is so hard to become published using the traditional route of going through a publisher or agent. For those of you who have never experienced this, it’s harder than you can ever imagine. I wouldn’t even like to guess how many talented authors there are who have tried and failed over the years only to give up pursuing their dreams.
Did you know you don’t need a Kindle to read Kindle books?

There must be lots of keen readers out there that have been watching this new revolution where Kindle owners get to buy their books at a fraction of the cost of traditional books, but don’t own a Kindle or similar device themselves. Well, do not despair. All e-books that you see on sale are available in different formats, so that not only can you read them on any portable device, but also on your computer. And when you buy an e-book from whatever site, you can download that book as many times as you want and in any format. So if you buy a book today to read on your computer, and if you buy a Kindle, for example, in a month’s time, you can download the same book absolutely free of charge. Once you’ve bought it, it’s yours.

Using my own children’s fantasy book, Truth Teller, as an example, here is what an e-book will look like when reading it on a computer in html format:

If you want to experience what a story is like on a Kindle before you purchase one, you can download a free Kindle app for your computer from Amazon. It will work in exactly the same way as a handheld Kindle.

With the free Kindle on your computer, you then have access to hundreds of free Kindle books that are available on the Amazon site.

Now, all you readers out there who still don’t own a device to read an e-book can now read to your heart’s desire. Isn’t the e-book a wonderful revolution? Now, may I be as bold as to suggest you start with my book. It really is a great story J I know, I’m cheeky. LOL

Happy reading, everyone!

Children's Author Kurt Chambers Debut Novel Release - Truth Teller

I’m so excited to announce my debut novel, Truth Teller, is officially released today. I never thought I would hear myself say those words. This series has been eight years in the making and one of the most amazing journeys I have ever undertaken in my whole life. Please let me indulge myself and tell you a bit about my story.

I was introduced to fantasy books by my mum at about the age of twelve. I instantly fell in love with them, but not being the best reader in the world, I struggled with some of the hard core classics. I wished there were books like these that were written especially for children like me. So, many years later when I started writing children’s novels, this seemed the perfect place to start. I wrote this series so children could enjoy the thrill of a traditional fantasy story without becoming overwhelmed. I’m very pleased with the results after finding my story was equally enjoyed by adults as well. The feedback I’ve received has been amazing from all age groups.

Ten-year-old Charlotte stumbles upon a strange shop when searching for a present. The creepy shopkeeper gives her an enchanting antique snow dome, but refuses to accept payment. All he asks is she promises to always tell the truth. She accepts his strange request.

Woken in the night, Charlotte is drawn by the globe’s eerie light and hypnotic power. With a sudden jerk, she finds herself stranded and all alone in a dark forest where she is discovered by a sword-wielding maniac. He calls himself, Elderfield, and he turns out to be a kind and brave teenage elf. He offers to take Charlotte to his family farm on a promise that he will help her find a way home.

They embark on an epic journey to find out why Charlotte has been brought to this realm and to pursue the one person who might be able to help, but none of them realise just how much is at stake. Strange things start to happen; visions come to her in dreams. They are hunted by real life monsters that attack with terrifying fury, but a far greater threat shadows their every move.

Fleeing for their lives, they reach the safety of an ancient mountain fortress and find the shopkeeper who gave Charlotte the dome. Her hopes of returning home are dashed as she is abducted by a druid assassin. Charlotte thinks she is defenceless against such a powerful foe, but in this realm, she is not the vulnerable little girl she thought she was.

This is just the start of Charlotte’s action-packed adventures. There are currently two other books in the series, The Wrath of Siren and Favian’s Law. Both books are complete and in the editing process. I hope to release these titles some time in the near future and make a compilation of all three books in a special hardback edition. In the meantime, I’m working on a fourth book in the series, Lost Magic.

Truth Teller Reviews:

Dawne Dominique - Multi-published author and professional cover artist.

The Truth Teller is one of the best children's fantasy book I've read in a long while. Charlotte is so easy to picture in my mind, and the fantasy aspects are brilliant! There are underlying currents of "real life lessons" that are subtly included...ideal for parents looking for that perfect bedtime story to read to their children. I loved the entire premise of the novel and will definitely be purchasing the next ones in this series.

Kurt Chambers has captured the genre with a wonderful story that will delight many a child's (and adult's) imagination.

Annie McMahon - Editor, published author and Novel Workshop moderator.

This book has everything a bestseller should have: compelling story, endearing characters, vivid descriptions, genuine emotions, and a lot of surprising twists and turns. This is a story about a friendship that transcends race, gender, age, and even realms, between Charlotte, a ten-year-old girl, and Elderfield, a teenage elf. Beautiful and heartwarming. I strongly recommend it and will be reviewing it on my blog.

Assistant Editor, Alicia Crouch

There is a lot of good humor in the Truth Teller, things that actually made me laugh out loud. I especially enjoyed watching the bond of friendship between Elder and Charlotte continually strengthen until they had become like family – that’s one of my favorite concepts in fantasy, and the author did a wonderful job of bringing it to life. He has got the skill to make the reader care about his characters, the most important and most difficult task an author must undertake. I really enjoyed the story, and look forward to working on the next book in the series.

The Countdown to Fame—Kurt Chambers

I have just three more days to the official launch of my debut MG fantasy novel, Truth Teller. Exciting times! I have been working furiously behind the scenes to make sure everything is just perfect for the big day. With the build-up to this, it made me wonder how hard is it going to be for me to sell my story. Is it going to be harder than selling YA or adult novels? As a MG author, I read MG novels, but not all adults do. Everyone I deal with on a daily basis is an adult, and a potential reader if I wrote adult novels. Maybe I’m worrying for nothing, only time will tell.

I will be starting my blog tour right here on my own blog on Wednesday, and slowly fan out to anyone who is willing to host me on their sites. So, any offers will be very welcome. Also, I would like to offer any bloggers out there a free Kindle version of my novel if they would be willing to review my story on their site. Please e-mail me at authortruthteller (at) googlemail (dot) com if you are interested.

Let the fun begin! J

The Year the World Will End – Kurt Chambers

2012 the year the world is meant to end. *chuckle* Man! I only have until December to make a success of myself, so I had better get my skates on! Don’t you just love those predictions about the world ending? At my age, I have heard it said so many times. The Millennium was one such year. My favourite one was when the planets aligned some years ago. That was actually quite interesting, because as an amateur astronomer, I stood in my garden one evening and saw all the planets in a higgledy-piggledy line. It was an amazing sight! Strangely enough, the world didn’t end that time either. LOL

So, 2012 is the end of the world again. For those of you who have been living in a cave somewhere and haven’t heard about this, please see this fascinating website and all will be explained… … It has a clock countdown and everything. How funny!

As we are all going to die, it’s a good year for me to release my debut novel, Truth Teller, an action packed children’s fantasy story, before it’s too late. Sadly, as this is part of a series, I can’t promise to have the other two books ready before the end of the world, but I promise I will do my best. I just hope that any of my newly acquainted fans are fast readers. For those of you who are not, get yourselves over to Amazon or Smashwords and grab yourself a copy quick! It’s not officially released until January 25th, but as the world is ending and by popular demand, I have uploaded a copy early that will cost you less than the price of a McDonald's meal, because I’m cool like that. J

The Amazing Author Anastasia V. Pergakis - Official Blog Tour

Today, my blog is dedicated to a very dear friend of mine, Anastasia V. Pergakis. Not only is she one of the nicest people I have ever met, she’s also an amazing and very talented author. All of us who are lucky enough to be her friend already know this, but today is your chance to discover this for yourself. Anastasia has released her debut novel, Cleanse Fire.

I was delighted when Anastasia asked me to be part of her blog tour. It is such a great honour. I could post excerpts and reviews about the book, but all of this is available from the websites. I want to introduce Anastasia herself so you can all get to know her a bit better as a person as well as a great author.

Anastasia, welcome to my blog. It’s a delight to have you here today. Please make yourself at home while I ask you ten random questions about personal life, and try and think what people would most like to know about you. LOL

You're making me blush. You're a great friend and support to me, and I think YOU are pretty amazing and talented. Thank you for letting me visit your blog yet again!

Me: You’re welcome on my blog anytime J Okay, let’s start from the beginning. When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer, and what inspired you to finally do it?

I'm not really sure. I've been writing for my entire life it seems, but I don't remember a moment where I had the thought "I want to be a writer" exactly. It just sort of happened. I dove in feet first without a second thought and haven't looked back since! I love it.

Me: What is the one thing you love most about being a writer?

I love getting to meet people, whether it's other authors, my fans, publishers, illustrators, cover artists, editors, you name it. I just love the interaction and support within the writing community. I've met so many wonderful people (like you, Kurt!) throughout the years, most of which I now consider to be my close personal friends. It is amazing to me to see people band together like this to help each other out. In any other work environment I've been in, that has never happened - at least not to this degree.

Me: I couldn’t agree with you more! In contrast to my last question, what is the one thing you dislike the most about being a writer?

Hrmmm, this is a tough one. Sure, it's not fun getting a rejection letter, getting bad reviews, or receiving nasty emails from people you're trying to help, but all in all, I love being a writer. The bad stuff is part of the process. It makes sure you know what the good parts are by comparison! But I don’t think there is anything I outright 'hate' or 'dislike' about being a writer.

Me: I’ve been dying to ask you this. What was your dad’s reaction when you told him about your book? Has he read it?

HAHA Awesome question. Okay, for those who don't know, I dedicated Cleanse Fire to my dad. He was the inspiration for the book after all, as I set out originally to write a story about his military career. In the end, it turned out as a fantasy novel with elves, but the basic premise of honoring my dad and all soldiers is still there. So, the book is dedicated to him and I donate to Wounded Warrior Project to support the troops.

Now, to answer the question. He was speechless! I don't think he really believed me at first either. I told him over the phone that I was dedicating the book to him, but it wasn't really until I snapped a photo of the dedication page and posted it on his Facebook wall that I think it really hit him. And, when he got his signed copy of the book just a few weeks ago, he took a picture of himself holding it and posted it up! He had a big smile on his face, so I'm sure he's happy and proud.

I don't think he has read it yet. I did send him an e-copy a while back, but he is like me and prefers print books. Now that he has a print copy, he'll read it. So even I can't wait to know what he thinks of it!

Me: As an author, I can fully appreciate how much work goes into a novel from the initial birth of an idea to when it comes out in print. How did it feel when you held the first copy of your book in your hand? This is something I can only imagine at the moment.

Oh my gosh. I cried. I laughed. I squealed. I felt weak in the knees! I might have hyperventilated a bit. The only thing I can compare the feelings to was the first time I saw my son, right after he was born. That just complete and utter AWE. Of course, this was a totally different sort of awe than my son - obviously - but like I said, it's the closest thing in my life I can think of that compares. I randomly squealed and clapped all day and carried the book around with me as we did errands too! LOL I couldn't stop staring at it!

Me: haha!! That is so cool. The thing I noticed most since joining the writing community is how much there is to learn when becoming a writer. Not just about writing, but the whole industry. You have been through this whole process now, but if you had your time again, would you have done anything differently?

Nope. I wouldn't change a thing. A part of me does wish I could have been published sooner but honestly, I think if I had been, it would have been a disaster. I just wasn't ready to deal with the 'bad' parts that sometimes go along with being published and honestly, my writing wasn't ready either. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be and I wouldn't change it for anything.

Me: What plans do you have for the future? Not just with this series, but your whole writing career?

More books! Of course, the rest of the Kinir Elite Chronicles is going to come out in the coming years. I'm writing Blood Trade as we speak! But I also have a few other fantasy books in the works. One I hope to release next year also is titled, Ryn's Quest. It's a YA fantasy, a grand adventure for Ryn to save the only family she has left. It's a little more on the humorous side than any of my other books, but hey, with a hyperactive pink dragon in the picture, things are bound to be silly! I plan on venturing into sci-fi at some point as well.

Me: If you won the jackpot on the lottery, what would you spend it on?

Oh. Really tough question. That depends on how much the jackpot is! I'm all for helping my friends, so while I might buy a few things for myself, I'll most likely help friends and family with most of it.

Me: How would you describe yourself to the rest of the world? Come on, don’t be modest.

I once told you, Kurt, that I'm a Plain American Girl, and you responded that I'm more like a Plain American Angel - so we'll go with that. ;)

Me: Do you have any strong beliefs in anything, like Karma, reincarnation, everything happens for a reason, astrology, anything like that?

I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Example for you. My husband and I owned a Honda Civic – well, we were still making payments at the time. Some paperwork with the dealer got mixed up and they told us we were behind on our payments and were going to repossess the car. We weren't behind, they found the mix up, and told us not to worry about it. Well, they came and took the car anyway! Oh yea, we were SO upset about that. So, we bought a Chevy Silverado pick up truck. Just a few months after we got the truck, we were in a major car accident, with another big pick up - at 75 miles an hour. If we had been in the little tiny Civic, I would have been crushed by that truck when it hit us (it hit on the passenger side, my side of the truck) and my son would have probably died or been severely injured too. So, while it was the worst thing ever to have them take our car, having the truck instead, I'm convinced, saved our lives! So yes, I definitely believe that everything, no matter how small or insignificant it seems, happens for a reason!

Me: Thank you so much, Anastasia, for your excellent answers. I love interviewing you! Now, please tell us about your awesome book, Cleanse Fire. I have a copy of this in my Kindle, and I have to say, it’s such a fantastic story.
